Dr. Sachio Semmoto, an alumnus of Kyoto University’s Faculty of Engineering and a Ph.D. graduate from the University of Florida in the United States, possesses over 30 years of experience in prominent leadership roles within Japan’s telecommunications industry.

Dr. Semmoto is recognized as a pioneer in the Japanese telecommunications industry and pivotal in several groundbreaking developments in the nation’s vital communication sector. In 1984, he established DDI Corporation, Japan’s first private telecommunication company. This initiative not only enhanced market competitiveness but also brought about a significant reduction in long-distance call rates. Subsequently, in 1999, he founded eAccess, contributing to the commercialization of the DSL market in Japan through an innovative business model. This led to a considerable decrease in the cost of ADSL services and spurred rapid technological advancements. Lastly, Dr. Semmoto founded EMOBILE, reshaping the landscape of Japan’s mobile communication market and ushering a more equitable competitive environment.

Dr. Semmoto stands out as one of Japan’s most accomplished serial entrepreneurs. In his entrepreneurial narrative, he illustrates that entrepreneurship goes beyond mere profit-seeking; it involves addressing the nation’s and its citizens’ needs while consistently challenging established norms. Notably, Dr. Semmoto is dedicated to imparting the principles and techniques of entrepreneurship to younger generations, inspiring numerous aspiring entrepreneurs through his legendary success stories.

Dr. Semmoto is the most legendary trailblazer not only in the Japanese telecommunications sector but also in the global communications industry. His impactful contributions to both the industry and the world set a high standard, serving as an inspiring model for all faculty members and students at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. It is with great honor that I, on behalf of the university, bestow upon Mr. Sachio Semmoto an honorary doctoral degree, acknowledging his remarkable contributions to enterprise management and the telecommunications industry.
